This handsome Red-breasted Sapsucker took up residence this winter in a neighbor’s small willow tree. It spends hours each day drilling holes and creating sap wells in many branches; note the sap running down the branch. It then moves from branch to branch drinking the sap. Nuttall’s Woodpecker, Yellow-rumped Warblers and Anna’s Hummingbirds also stop by the wells to enjoy the sweet bounty.
