A friend and I were out birding in the Helen Schuler Nature Reserve. Pileated Woodpecker was one of our target birds, but our chance of success was less than 5%. We were just ready to quit when we heard a loud drumming off in the distance. We were both sure it was a Pileated Woodpecker. We calculated where we thought it might be and went to the area. A few seconds later, we heard it right above where we were standing. Talk about luck. It was our first Pileated Woodpecker for 2020.
