Description

We have enjoyed having up to 12 Cardinals call the woods behind our house home this winter. They are gorgeous birds, but they are also very skittish. They also are ground eaters. From inside our house, many times we watched as the Cardinals would perch for a moment on some of the “weeds” before dropping down to get some of the leftover seed. We realized then that some of the things we would call “weeds” were actually useful for perching, camouflaging, and protection for our little friends. I wanted to catch a view showing their importance for our songbirds, so I stayed back near our deck and waited and waited. Eventually this female popped up from the hillside below. She landed on some weeds before dropping down to the ground to enjoy some of the seed below the feeders.
