I was standing outside photographing some of the birds at the feeders when a blue jay sounded the alarm call, sending small birds flying in every direction, including into the cherry tree’s dense branches. A moment later a young sharp-shinned hawk flew in and landed on the tree, trying to flush some of the birds. I stayed still, waiting to see what would happen – eventually the sharpie gave up and flew into the woods.
