Description

Pileated Woodpeckers are quite a rare sighting in Lethbridge. Most bird books show this area to be out of their range. The Oldman River valley is full of old growth Cottonwoods and once in a while Pileated Woodpeckers are seen in the Helen Schuler Nature Reserve. During the second day of the Great Backyard Bird Count, I was lucky enough to see this male. He wasn’t the least bit concerned about my presence and just kept busy working on getting a meal. I was shooting bursts and was able to capture wood chips flying through the air as he hammered away at the tree.
