The Woodpecker arrived just before this photo. It may or may not have seen a fly-by by a Cooper’s Hawk just minutes before. The Wren froze in its position in reaction to the hawk sighting…and began feeding on peanuts again a short time after this photo. The temperature was about 14 degrees with wind and blowing snow. A hawk pass can be dangerous, but so can freezing to death without food overnight. Both birds took their chances.
